O whither might
the wariness alight -
Whose gaze transfixes all who need to see
Whil'st clearing their contaminated sight -
Of hunger, the guest essence of the free?
And when, at last, it reaches some resort
And rests upon its perch, perspectively
Might most who see it sense its grim report
And so dismiss it there reflexively?
The analogues of learning preach on high
That wisdom only visits those in pain.
Yet hunger, strongest whence it cometh nigh
Doth healing resolutions draw insane.
So how can 'less is more' restore the norm
Than 'feed our empty stomachs, keep us warm'?
